At The Democratic School, democracy is not a topic in a textbook. It is how we live and learn together. Each year, our Student Council Election gives learners a real experience of civic life.
In November 2022, candidates prepared manifestos, designed campaign materials and delivered speeches to their peers, setting out how they hoped to improve school life. Learners listened, asked questions and weighed the proposals before casting their votes by secret ballot.
The election was organised just as an official one would be, with a polling station, a ballot box, polling staff and a transparent count. Candidates experienced both the courage of standing for office and the grace of accepting the result.
The elected Student Council represents the views of learners in decisions about school life. Through this process our students practise the skills of active citizenship: speaking up, listening to others, taking responsibility and respecting the will of the community. Every child heard. Every child respected. Every child responsible.
